EUGENE, Ore. -- Beginning January 1st, it will be illegal to dispose of certain electronics.
In 2007, Oregon created legislation to educate and help residents and businesses recycle their computers, monitors and televisions for free.
There are now more than 200 collection sites statewide like Next Step Recycling in Eugene. Read more »

Lorraine Kerwood turned a computer-repair hobby into a community endeavor. She is executive director of Oregon-based NextStep Recycling, which provides computers and job training to disadvantaged and special-needs people, and sells refurbished computers and other electronics at two ReUse stores. As you unpack your brand-new TV or computer this holiday season, keep in mind that the old one cannot be put in the trash. A state law goes into effect Jan. 1 that specifically bans televisions, laptops, computer CPUs and monitors from entering landfills or incinerators in Oregon.
