Lorraine speaks at the Eugene-Bethel Lions Club

Recycling your old electronics has gotten much easier these daysLorraine Kerwood is the Executive Director of NextStep Recycling and after listening to her presentation on the need to recycle, it makes you want to clean out the garage of all those old computer monitors and disk drives. Her company will take any household electronics to keep it from reaching the local landfill. They will even accept Styrofoam. Her enthusiasm and excitement for what she does just seemed to spill over in her presentation and it is hard to not catch some of that excitement when you listen to her. Her firm has grown from a humble beginnings in her mother-inlaw’s garage to a building that now encompasses 10,000 square feet and 21 employees plus numerous volunteers. After 30 hours of working at the center, volunteers are given a computer to take home. To date they have refurbished over 10,000 computers and have processed over 800 tons of waste that didn’t make it into the landfill. They have a thrift store in addition to the recycling center that sell refurbished electronics to the public. To date they have placed used and/or refurbished computers in over 20 different countries. They do this by partnering with the Peace Corp. Lorraine certainly seems to have found her nitch in life. She hopes to eventually work with such organizations as the Lions Clubs in the future as she looks to identify more sources for electronic components. Our own Kent Calvin is one of the volunteers. It was a great presentation and was well received.{nl}{nl}
