What’s the haps with the digital TV conversion?

Lorraine

NextStep Recycling tells you all about it: On February 17, 2009, every full-power television station n the US will stop broadcasting analog signals and switch to 100% digital broadcasting. Why? Digital broadcasting promises to provide a clearer picture, more programming options and will free up airwaves for use by emergency responders. The switch over is happening, whether we like it or not! But, DON’T PANIC AND HIT THE STORE! REUSE OF YOUR TELEVISON IS TOTALLY DOABLE. You DO NOT need to purchase a new television!

1. Will my old TV set still work with the digital conversion?
You bet! Digital TV and High Definition (HDTV) are two different things. No one has to change to HDTV, but everyone will need to switch to digital TV to continue watching television.
2. How do I get the new signal? You can get a converter that will allow you to receive the Digital TV signal.
3. So, do I have to buy an analog to digital converter box?
-If you currently use cable or satellite service your provider will take care of the conversion for you. Cool!
-If you have a digital TV and get your TV programs from an antenna or over the air, you will not have to do anything. Consult your owner's manual or look at your TV set to find out if your set has an input connection labeled "digital input" or "ATSC".
-You will need to get a digital converter box if you have an analog TV and get your TV programs from "rabbit ears" or a rooftop antenna.

If you need a converter box you can apply for a $40.00 TV Converter Box Coupon (limit 2 per household ) These federally funded coupons can be applied toward the $50 to $70 cost of eligible converter boxes available in early 2008 at retailers where you would normally buy consumer electronics products.

4. How do I request a coupon?
Between January 1, 2008 and March 31, 2009, you can request a coupon while supplies last in one of four ways:
    Apply online
Call the Coupon Program 24-hour hotline 1-888-388-2009, TTY 1-877-530-2634

NextStep wants community members to make informed choices. Please contact us at 541-686-2366 or recycling@nextsteprecycling.org if you have questions.

Get the box and do your part to minimize what would otherwise be a potential HUGE solid waste and hazardous waste disaster over the next year.

We believe US legislation on E-waste needs to become “federal” so that all the States follow the same rules, with the emphasis on reuse BEFORE shredding.
